Random words

Random Association is an idea generation method which allows students to systematically generate new ideas through a fixed formula. The whole premise of Random Association is to use a Random Word to provoke a reaction from the brain.

Random Word technique is indeed the most basic and obviously creative technique where you use a random word to generate new ideas. By getting a random word as a prompt and enabling yourself to use it to solve your problems and you are practically guaranteed to attack the problem from a different direction to normal. You take a word from a random word generator, extract its underlying principles and then apply them to your problem to see how they can help. The skill is stopping your mind from

(a ) thinking this is silly

(b)  directly using the actual principles behind the word to your problem without changing them to    ones which are easier to apply.

Our task this week was about to design a  scary image or object based on  a random word - KITTEN. We were required to something that is creepy or terror that will make people feel scared from entering the place.

This is a mind map that for my ideation. I jot my ideas down based on the random word given, kitten.

This is my final output was based on the word - SHARP. It is a construct that looks like a giant dark pandemonium that will create the atmosphere of eerie to the visitors who passed by the area. It is a compilation of all huge and tall sharp pillar and the ground was designed with the effects of blood splashing, and skeletons could be seen everywhere on the ground. This is only a visual effect that will make people frightened upon approaching this place.  The sharp thorn at the top of this construct may frighten off the people.  This is a normal phenomena as we dread of something that is sharp and may cut, hurt or harm our lives.
Thus, for me, the overall design of this edifice is able to instill fear among people.

Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition can be defined as placing two variable, side by side and their contrast or similarity are shown through comparison. Many creative processes rely on juxtaposition. By juxtaposing two objects or words next to each other, human brain will automatically associate or transfer meaning. Usually ‘turning’ something familiar to something less familiar or vice-versa.

Task I
This week, we were given a more unique task in the creative studies class:

The above were all the keywords and these words were the keywords for this exercise.Despite, we were told to choose our favourite number in the range of 00 to 99!!

Guess what?! I chosen number of 08, 50, 81...

Then, the lecturer reviewed the usage of those numbers and the code of numbers were arranged in such the way like the above shown.

Then, we need to combine the words as the numbers we had chosen. For example: 08 = Fly and Wood

Hence, the words that I were going to used were:
  • Fly and wood
  • Fire and head
  • Oil and water
Make three sentences by using these three pairs of words. For instance, I made a sentence of "There is a fly on the piece of wood." from the words "Fly" as well as "Wood".

The senteces I made:
  • There is a fly on the piece of wood.
  • There is a fire on that monster's head.
  • I saw an oil layer on that surface of water in the cup.
Well, the interesting part was that we need to illustrate our sentences by means of drawings.

  • There is a fly on the piece of wood.

  • There is a fire on that monster's head.

  • I saw an oil layer on that surface of water in the cup.

Finally, we were asked to combine the two words in each pair to form a new term and illustrations were needed for the terms combined.

  • Flywood
  • firehead
  • oilwater

Task II

The second exercise in class was to create a creature by mixing the characteristics of two animals which in fact hardly to be able to survive in this world and state the reason for that.

We knew that fish used grills to inhale air to get oxygen and this applied to the categories of fishes. Whereas, horse who is a mammal, is using the lungs for inhalation or respiration and the criteria for horse is on the land.
So if fish was to combine to horse as shown above, the newly species borned will have difficulties for respiration.
Furthermore the overall body structure is unstable. The fish is very light and if it is combined with legs, it is impossible for it to swim or even walk as it may fall down eventually most of the times.

Task III:

This is an analogy exercise.
The first exercise is to create a passage or writing that describes the concept of Love”  based on "CHILI".

Babe, I love you just like I like chilli,
I feel hot upon seeing your lovely smile.
One bite on chilli is spicy,
One kiss from you is rejuvenate.
Your pretty face makes me blushed,
Resemble how I feel upon eating chilli.
Your sweet voice makes my heart melted,
Babe, I love you just like I like chilli,
I feel hot upon seeing your lovely face.
One taste from chilli is spicy,
One hug from you is warmth.

I hope to have you forever,
I hope to hug you forever,
I hope to kiss you forever,
I hope to share with you forever,
I hope the glance from you stays forever,
I hope to feel the love from you forever.
Your compassionate make me brave,
Your presence brightened up my life,
Babe, Are you willing to be my wife?
I promised I will never leave you alone.

The next exercise was to create a poem that shows the concept of "Love or Life"  based on the image of a cup of coffee.

Coffee without sugar is bitter,
Life without you is bitter.
I need coffee everyday,to make me feel refreshed,
I need you everyday, to make my life brightened.
Coffee give me the power to focus,
You give me the power to be courageous.
Coffee makes me addicted,
You makes me passionated.

Dear, can you accept my love towards you?
Can you willing to be my dearest life spouse?
I know the answer, thats why I wont ask you,
But I will forever keep this secret within my heart forever...

Lastly, we needed to describe the concept of "Man or Woman ", by using mortar and pestle.

Man needs woman,
Woman needs man.
This world is incomplete without man,
This world is incomplete without woman.
Man cant be formed without woman,
Woman cant be formed without man.
Man is destined to be with woman,
Woman is destined to be with man.
Just like mortar needs pestle,
Pestle needs mortar.
Mortar is junk without pestle,
Pestle is useless without mortar.
Man and woman fated to be together,
Mortar and pestle formed to be together.

mindmap

mind map is a diagram used to represent wordsideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generatevisualizestructure, and classify ideas, and as an aid tostudying and organizing information, solving problemsmaking decisions, and writing.
The elements of a given mind map are arranged intuitively according to the importance of the concepts, and are classified into groupings, branches, or areas, with the goal of representing semantic or other connections between portions of information. Mind maps may also aid recall of existing memories.
By presenting ideas in a radial, graphical, non-linear manner, mind maps encourage a brainstorming approach to planning and organizational tasks. Though the branches of a mindmap represent hierarchical tree structures, their radial arrangement disrupts the prioritizing of concepts typically associated with hierarchies presented with more linear visual cues. This orientation towards brainstorming encourages users to enumerate and connect concepts without a tendency to begin within a particular conceptual framework.
The mind map can be contrasted with the similar idea of concept mapping. The former is based on radial hierarchies and tree structures denoting relationships with a central governing concept, whereas concept maps are based on connections between concepts in more diverse patterns.

A concept map is a way of representing relationships between ideasimages or words, in the same way that a sentence diagram represents the grammar of a sentence, a road map represents the locations of highways and towns, and a circuit diagram represents the workings of an electrical appliance. In a concept map, each word or phrase is connected to another and linked back to the original idea, word or phrase. Concept maps are a way to develop logical thinking and study skills, by revealing connections and helping students see how individual ideas form a larger whole.[2]
Concept maps were developed to enhance meaningful learning in the sciences. A well-made concept map grows within a context frame defined by an explicit "focus question," while a mind map often has only branches radiating out from a central picture. There is research evidence that knowledge is stored in the brain in the form of productions (situation-response conditionals) that act on declarative memory content which is also referred to as chunks or propositions. Because concept maps are constructed to reflect organization of the declarative memory system, they facilitate sense-making and meaningful learning on the part of individuals who make concept maps and those who use them.

Logical Mind Map
A logical mind map is directly connected to stereotypes. The Logical mind map comprises of solely stereotype words. Which means that every word or image that is put within the mind map is directly related to the central subject through its links.

As I mentioned just now, we were assigned to create a logical mind map in class. We have to design a mind map about the personalities as well as other characteristics of a friend of us.

This mindmap was being done by my course mate- yew hsuen tatt. He used the above mindmap to describe me. He even helped me created one avatar for my blog, which was as followed:

Associated Mind Map
Associated mind map using the main central subject to generate new random words and show the links between words that seemingly have no connection.

Our next task was to illustrate three objects based on the associated mind map provided. The main central subject of the associated mind map was:
                                Mortar & Pestle:

Definition
A mortar and pestle is a tool used to crush, grind, and mix solid substances (trituration). The pestle is a heavy bat-shaped object, the end of which is used for crushing and grinding. The mortar is a bowl, typically made of hard wood, ceramic or stone. The substance to be ground is placed in the mortar and ground, crushed or mixed with the pestle.

Associated mindmap:
Well, based on the associated mind map provided above, I have chosen these three words:
Fashion, Games, Weapons

Fashion:

The pestles will be arranged to be like a necklace for girls, whereas mortar is used as a decorative item for the dress to looked more nicely.

Games:

Firstly, the mortars are arranged as like a tall and huge tower. Then the aim of this game was to throw the pestles into the mortars. The person who can have the highest number of pestles to be in the mortars will be the winner.
Weapons

Pretty interesting if mortar and pestle can be used as weapons as shown above..
Wel, the pestle can be made sharp to function as a dart for long range attack.
Then, it can also act as claw to hurt enemies as well as arrows for long range attack. AS for mortar, It is hard enough to be a shield...

Google founders:

Google began in January 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were both PhD students atStanford University in California.
While conventional search engines ranked results by counting how many times the search terms appeared on the page, the two theorized about a better system that analyzed the relationships between websites. They called this new technologyPageRank, where a website's relevance was determined by the number of pages, and the importance of those pages, that linked back to the original site.
A small search engine called "RankDex" from IDD Information Services designed by was, since 1996, already exploring a similar strategy for site-scoring and page ranking. The technology in RankDex would be patented and used later when Li founded Baidu in China.
Page and Brin originally nicknamed their new search engine "BackRub", because the system checked backlinks to estimate the importance of a site.
Eventually, they changed the name to Google, originating from a misspelling of the word "googol", the number one followed by one hundred zeros, which was meant to signify the amount of information the search engine was to handle. Originally, Google ran under the Stanford University website, with the domaingoogle.stanford.edu.
The domain name for Google was registered on September 15, 1997, and the company was incorporated on September 4, 1998. It was based in a friend's (Susan Wojcicki) garage in Menlo ParkCalifornia. Craig Silverstein, a fellow Ph.D. student at Stanford, was hired as the first employee.

Bill gates:

Bill Gates?

He's an American business magnate, philanthropist, author and chairman of Microsoft, the software company he founded with Paul Allen. He is consistently ranked among the world's wealthiest people and was the wealthiest overall from 1995 to 2009, excluding 2008, when he was ranked third. During his career at Microsoft, Gates held the positions of CEO and chief software architect, and remains the largest individual shareholder with more than 8 percent of the common stock. He has also authored or co-authored several books.

Description of Bill Gates...
Bill Gates is an unconventional and innovative person, and he is seen as a rebel, reformer, or highly unusual in his manners, appearance, or attitudes. Bill enjoys being unpredictable, and he does not conform to the standards that other people have set. Above all, Bill Gates is an individualist, and he does what he pleases regardless of customs and norms. His environment and life circumstances may change frequently and abruptly.

His childhood and early home life were colored by a great deal of confusion or by people with unusually active imaginations, aspirations, or fantasies. It is difficult for Bill Gates to see his childhood and his relationships with his parents in a clear, realistic light. Bill may search for the ideal, loving home he wishes he had, or believe he had, when he was a child. Finding inner peace and a sense of emotional security within himself is important to Gates.

He is likely to have a fixation on money, wealth, and material resources. Bill Gates may totally renounce material desires and ownership, or become obsessed with having, owning, and accumulating. Bill's attitudes towards owning, keeping, and sharing will undergo major changes in his lifetime, and his fortunes are likely to run very hot or very cold.

"Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose."
                                                                                                                                      -Bill Gates

Why Bill Gates is considered as a creative man?
The invention of Microsoft proved the creativity of Bill Gates. Besides that, when he led Microsoft, he realized that he didn't have to know everything. He recognized that he had employees who did. But, he appreciated the importance of taking the time to learn what they knew and absorb their creative thinking. He took time to listen to their ideas and he took the time, twice a year, to read and ponder the future of Microsoft as well as the creative thinking of his employees. How often do you take time to read about new ideas, revel in the creative thinking of your staff, consider creatively your current work and life, and make changes? Not often enough, I’ll bet. These different ways of management showed that Bill Gates is creative enough.

Novelty of Bill Gates...
Bill Gates has made the nation pop-eyed with amazement through his invention of Microsoft products. The Microsoft Word was indeed a well-designed software. It was first released under the name Multi-Tool Word in 1983. That version was designed for use on Xenix systems. It wasn't untill 1989 that a version was designed for Microsoft Windows. Subsequent versions were later written for several other platforms including IBM PCs running DOS (1983), the Apple Macintosh (1984), the AT&T Unix PC (1985), Atari ST (1986), SCO UNIX, OS/2, and Microsoft Windows (1989). It is a component of the Microsoft Office system; it is also sold as a standalone product and included in Microsoft Works Suite. The current versions are Microsoft Word 2010 for Windows and 2011 for Mac. All these Microsoft products proved to us the novelty of Bill Gates and the IT world get immensely influenced by his incredibly Microsoft design.

Innovation of Bill Gates...
In 1980, IBM approached Microsoft to write the BASIC interpreter for its upcoming personal computer, the IBM PC. When IBM's representatives mentioned that they needed an operating system, Gates referred them to Digital Research (DRI), makers of the widely used CP/M operating system. IBM's discussions with Digital Research went poorly, and they did not reach a licensing agreement. IBM representative Jack Sams mentioned the licensing difficulties during a subsequent meeting with Gates and told him to get an acceptable operating system. A few weeks later Gates proposed using 86-DOS (QDOS), an operating system similar to CP/M that Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products (SCP) had made for hardware similar to the PC. Microsoft made a deal with SCP to become the exclusive licensing agent, and later the full owner, of 86-DOS. After adapting the operating system for the PC, Microsoft delivered it to IBM as PC-DOS in exchange for a one-time fee of $50,000. Gates did not offer to transfer the copyright on the operating system, because he believed that other hardware vendors would clone IBM's system. They did, and the sales of MS-DOS made Microsoft a major player in the industry. This showed to us how well Bill Gates brought in his new idea and made changes.

The Inventor-Bill Gates...
Bill Gates, from a well-off family, was enrolled at age 13 in an exclusive college preparatory school where he had the opportunity, courtesy of the Mothers Club, to use computers. He showed talent early, writing programs in BASIC and then later in other languages. He loved how a computer could perfectly execute a set of instructions designed to do whatever you needed the machine to do. By age 16 he was writing his school's class scheduling program. He formed, with Paul Allen, his first business at age 17. With extremely high test scores, he was accepted at Harvard, where he spent lots of time on computers and forged friendships with other students who would later be his business partners. Bill Gates invented computer software not just because of his love of the computer but very much because of his entrepreneurial nature and a desire to profit from his work through businesses of his own.
